Miki & Brian’s Wedding – Red Butte Garden – Salt Lake City, Utah

August 31st, 2010

Miki and Brian started dating in high school back in Boulder, Colorado and have been together for more than thirteen years.  It was exciting for family and friends who have known them as a couple for so long to see them tie the knot at Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Red Butte Garden is one of Miki & Brian’s favorite places to go together in Salt Lake City so it was a natural choice for their wedding.  It was my first time photographing a wedding at the Garden and I think it is a fantastic venue for photographs!

Miki and Brian met before the ceremony and the staff at Red Butte Garden took us out to the Oak Tunnel by golf cart – there are so many great spots to take pictures around the gardens but this one was our favorite.

I thought Miki’s wedding gown was so perfect for her – it is an Augusta Jones design from Alta Moda Bridal in Salt Lake City.  Miki made the beautiful bridal bouquet herself.

The reception was held in the Orangerie, which is a beautiful space with floor to ceiling glass walls.  Dinner was catered by An Exquisite Affair and the table arrangements were done by The Art Floral. Brian made sure to show off the purple socks he wore to match his tie during the cocktail hour on the patio just outside the Orangerie.

I stole Miki and Brian from the reception during dinner for a few more pictures during the sunset.  The Garden contains over 100 acres of land and borders a large area of open space on the east side of the city, on the foothills of the Wasatch.  I love the way the tall grasses turn golden at this time of year.

Ryan from Utah Jive kept the crowd entertained on the dance floor, which was back out on the patio outside the Orangerie.  Thanks to my assistant Jen and to Pete for the help with my top secret project (stay tuned this winter).

Miki and Brian left the next day for a honeymoon in Turkey which included a hot air balloon ride and I imagine many other great adventures.  See more pictures in the slideshow by clicking on the link below. Congratulations to Miki & Brian!

Jodi and Mark’s Wedding – Calgary, Alberta

August 19th, 2010

Jodi and Mark’s wedding took place at a private residence in Calgary, Alberta.  It was an intimate wedding ceremony and reception with only about forty or so guests – just close friends and family.

There was a threat of thunderstorms that never materialized, and the light was gorgeous all evening.  We did have to take a few breaks from the formal portraits to kill the mosquitoes that had accumulated though.

Croquet and Bocce Ball took the place of dancing at the reception – it was very comfortable outside, a welcome escape from the heat of Salt Lake City in July.

It is always interesting to experience a foreign culture – for example the warnings on Canadian cigarette packs are a little bit more graphic!

Katharine and Nic’s Wedding – Stowe, Vermont

August 4th, 2010

I will probably get the details wrong, but Katharine and Nic’s courtship is a great love story.  The short short version: Nic is from South Africa and met Katharine briefly in Cambridge, Mass. while competing in the Head Of The Charles Regatta.  Nic was so taken by Katherine that he wrote her a love letter from South Africa when he returned.  Katharine was flattered but wrote back saying that she did not think it could work due to the distance, but that anything was possible – and the rest is history!  What a great lesson in both going after what you want in life and being open minded to all possibilities.

The ceremony was held at the Blessed Sacrament Church in Stowe, Vermont.  Katharine and Nic were surprised with serenade of Vuvuzelas upon their exit from the church.

After the ceremony, we did some portraits in downtown Stowe before heading up to the reception at Edson Hill Manor.

The reception started off with a lovely two hour “cocktail hour” complete with a raw bar.  If I am invited to a wedding as a guest, I can generally be found at the raw bar until my wife pulls me away.  In this case since I was hired to photograph, I took some photos of the oysters before helping myself to a few plates.

Due to some unfortunate circumstances, Nic’s parents were unable to attend the wedding.  I always try to get a collection of images that will make everyone that was at the wedding feel like they are re-living the experience.  I hope that Nic’s parents will be able to experience something of the wedding day when they see these.
