Caroline and Justin Engaged – New York, New York

December 30th, 2010

I spent a few days in New York visiting friends and getting my culture fix before photographing Beth and Mike’s wedding a few weeks ago.  Justin is an old friend who was in my wife Leah’s medical school class so I spent one night at the apartment he shares with Caroline in Harlem and we did an “engagement” session the next morning around town.  Caroline and Justin are actually already legally married after a very brief ceremony at city hall this October, but I will be photographing their wedding (officially a blessing) in a little 14th century church in England this spring (2011 is shaping up to be a good year!)  We started at Lincoln Center and then made our way down to breakfast at Cafe Gitane, and finished the shoot over in Williamsburg, Brooklyn at the Hotel Delmano.

Jen & Jeremy Engaged – Guardsman’s Pass, Salt Lake City, Utah

November 23rd, 2010

Jen and Jeremy took me up Big Cottonwood Canyon in Jeremy’s old jeep.  We caught the last rays of the sunset and the last of the fall color – the canyons are now buried in snow.  We drove up to the summit of Guardsman’s Pass, where Jen and Jeremy had shared one of their early dates.

Claire Donnelly made Jen’s art deco style engagement ring – I will have to get in closer for some more detailed pictures because it is really beautiful.

I will be photographing Jen & Jeremy’s wedding next summer.  See the rest of the photos and order prints here.

Jennifer & Jeffrey Newlywed – Battery Park, New York, New York

November 18th, 2010

I had an engagement session scheduled with Jen and Jeff back in July, but it turned out to be unbearably hot and humid that weekend – I think it actually hit 100 degrees!  All of my clothing was sticking to my body and sweat was pouring into my eyes – it was disgusting!  So it was kind of a relief that Jen asked if they could do the shoot another time.  I photographed their wedding in September, so instead of an engagement shoot we did a “newleywed” shoot in Battery Park last month near their apartment in lower Manhattan.  I was in New York for the week in between two weekend shoots in Vermont.  It turned out to be a beautiful morning and much more comfortable than the last time I was there!

Miki & Brian Engaged – Bonneville Salt Flats

July 5th, 2010

Brian, Miki and I headed out to the Bonneville Salt Flats in western Utah for their engagement photos.  This is definitely one of the most surreal landscapes I have ever seen!  It seems like you can see the curvature of the earth here.

After the sun set, we got into our time machine (not pictured) and went vintage.  The idea for these photos was inspired by Miki and Brian’s love of adventure travel.  They have been all over the world together, including Peru, China, Australia, Nepal, India, and Malaysia to name a few stamps in their passports.

The camera that Brian is using is a working Zeiss Ikon 5″x7″ field camera, which belonged to my great, great uncle and was given to me by my grandparents.  It is about eighty years old and in fantastic shape.

Miki and Brian would be able to find their way around a strange place in any century.  They are planning a honeymoon in Turkey – just because it is at the top of the list!  Instead of registering for salad tongs and avocado slicers, these explorers are asking their guests to pitch in for Kebabs in Istanbul and a Hot Air Balloon Ride over Cappadocia.  (check out travelersjoy.com if you like this idea)  I have a feeling that should the balloon stray off course and carry them thousands of miles off course they would take it in stride.

We ended the shoot with a lovely picnic in the fading light.

The pink blanket is a 2010 vintage, but I liked the color.  Miki and Brian will be married at Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City, Utah this August.

Mark & Jodi Engaged – Salt Lake City, Utah

June 24th, 2010

I met up with Mark and Jodi for their engagement session on the grounds of the Utah state capitol.  Mark lives a couple blocks away so it was an easy walk after we shared some wine at Mark’s place.

Tala and Ellie, Jodi and Mark’s dogs, joined us for the shoot – they were good sports for the most part but they did demand some of their own time in the spotlight!  Jodi and Mark met here in Utah, but Jodi is from the Calgary, Alberta area and I will be traveling there to photograph the wedding at the end of July.
