Miki & Brian Engaged – Bonneville Salt Flats

July 5th, 2010

Brian, Miki and I headed out to the Bonneville Salt Flats in western Utah for their engagement photos.  This is definitely one of the most surreal landscapes I have ever seen!  It seems like you can see the curvature of the earth here.

After the sun set, we got into our time machine (not pictured) and went vintage.  The idea for these photos was inspired by Miki and Brian’s love of adventure travel.  They have been all over the world together, including Peru, China, Australia, Nepal, India, and Malaysia to name a few stamps in their passports.

The camera that Brian is using is a working Zeiss Ikon 5″x7″ field camera, which belonged to my great, great uncle and was given to me by my grandparents.  It is about eighty years old and in fantastic shape.

Miki and Brian would be able to find their way around a strange place in any century.  They are planning a honeymoon in Turkey – just because it is at the top of the list!  Instead of registering for salad tongs and avocado slicers, these explorers are asking their guests to pitch in for Kebabs in Istanbul and a Hot Air Balloon Ride over Cappadocia.  (check out travelersjoy.com if you like this idea)  I have a feeling that should the balloon stray off course and carry them thousands of miles off course they would take it in stride.

We ended the shoot with a lovely picnic in the fading light.

The pink blanket is a 2010 vintage, but I liked the color.  Miki and Brian will be married at Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City, Utah this August.

Mark & Jodi Engaged – Salt Lake City, Utah

June 24th, 2010

I met up with Mark and Jodi for their engagement session on the grounds of the Utah state capitol.  Mark lives a couple blocks away so it was an easy walk after we shared some wine at Mark’s place.

Tala and Ellie, Jodi and Mark’s dogs, joined us for the shoot – they were good sports for the most part but they did demand some of their own time in the spotlight!  Jodi and Mark met here in Utah, but Jodi is from the Calgary, Alberta area and I will be traveling there to photograph the wedding at the end of July.

Jessica and Michael’s Engagement Session – Las Vegas, Nevada

April 14th, 2010

I met with Jessica and Michael for a night time engagement session while I was in Las Vegas, Nevada a few weeks ago for the WPPI (wedding and portrait photographers international) convention.

Jessica and Michael live in Las Vegas, but they will be married at the Stein Eriksen Lodge at Deer Valley this July.  Jessica and Michael met at the Flamingo, so we spent a lot of our time shooting nearby.  I love photographing at night, so don’t be shy about scheduling a shoot in the evening!

Tom & Meredith Engaged – Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah

October 15th, 2009

I met with Tom & Meredith for a morning engagement shoot up in Big Cottonwood Canyon.  There was still a little bit of foloiage color left, but winter is definitely approaching in the canyons!  There was an interesting mix of fall and winter colors to make the backdrop.  Tom moved to Salt Lake City a few months ago to start his new job, but Meredith had just arrived in Utah the night before.

Anne & Roy’s Wedding – Sliver Lake Lodge, Deer Valley, Utah

September 16th, 2009

The rain cleared up just in time for Anne and Roy’s mountain ceremony at Deer Valley.  Before the ceremony, Anne surprised Roy with a shotgun that has belonged to her family for a long time.  Roy’s gift to Anne was a sweet pair of powder skis that will hopefully come in handy often this winter.  The gifts were exchanged inside to contain the alarming sight of a bride carrying a shotgun.

We dodged the downhill mountain bikers on the way to make the portrait below – it was starting to rain but I managed to get one of my favorite shots in the few seconds we were out in this field.

Catherine and her staff at Deer Valley did a fantastic job coordinating the event.  Everything went smoothly and they were especially hospitable to the other vendors such as myself and the John Flanders Band.  The reception was held in the Silver Lake Lodge, with a cocktail hour on the patio outside.  This was the first event held on a brand new patio outside the Silver Lake Lodge finished in time for this wedding.  Anne and Roy danced to “Ring of Fire”, made famous by Johnny Cash.  Since I am so focused on making pictures, I usually have a hard time remembering what song was used for the first dance, but in this case it was very easy.

The last shot on the right is by my assistant Jen; she climbed up to the balcony to shoot from above only to find the door locked when she climbed back down!  See more pictures in the slideshow – click on the link below to view.
