Human + Being at The Center For Fine Art Photography

February 3rd, 2011

I am proud to announce that this image was selected out of 1,419 submissions to appear in “Human + Being”, a juried group show which will be on display from March 25, 2011 until April 23, 2011 at The Center For Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado. The juror Phil Borges chose one image as his Juror’s selection and my image was chosen as one of two honorable mentions for the show. Not bad for an image that I took without even looking through the viewfinder! I shot this image “from the hip” using zone focusing combined with very high ISO and a high shutter speed with a wide angle lens. The picture was taken just outside of Kejetia Market in Kumasi, Ghana last year. Kejetia Market is the largest open air market in Africa. You can see more of my photographs from Ghana here. I will to try to make it to the opening on April 1, 2011.

Happy Holidays!

December 22nd, 2010

I am finishing up one last slideshow for a beautiful winter wedding which will be posted tomorrow, and then we are off to Vermont (where the photo above was taken) for a vacation.

Preston Farm and Winery – Healdsburg, California

November 16th, 2010

Preston Farm and Winery in northern Sonoma Valley was our favorite of the Wineries we visited on our trip to wine country a few weeks ago.  It is an unpretentious place with a beautiful garden and courtyard.  Leah is smiling because she just discovered some olives that she actually likes after years of refusing them.  I try them myself every once in a while but I still do not like the taste, so I am jealous.  I will keep trying though, as I have discovered a taste for some of my favorite foods only in the past few years, such as avocados, mussels, and raw oysters.

Workshop with Keith Carter in New Orleans

November 14th, 2010

I took an amazing workshop this weekend with Keith Carter, who has been my favorite photographer for many years.  The workshop was hosted by The New Orleans Photography Workshops.  The weekend included some shooting time at the studio and home of David Halliday, a local photographer.  I am ecstatic when I get one picture that I like from a weekend of shooting – there are a couple candidates but I think this one is it.  It needs a title – for now I’m going to call it “The Queen Visits A New Orleans Courtyard In Her Glass Vessel.”  New Orleans is a wonderful city full of history, culture, food, music, and characters – a great place to get the creative juices flowing.

Business Names in Ghana

October 14th, 2010

It was about a year ago that my wife Leah and I were on our way to Ghana.  If you are new to my blog, take a look at my posts from that trip.  In addition to the wonderful custom painted designs for businesses, the names of the businesses have a style of their own in Ghana.  They always made us smile if not even laugh out loud!  These businesses are often in sheds or under open wooden structures and will sell anything that you could ever need.  We have a few photos, but there were many more that we saw on rides throughout the country that we could not photograph.  We started taking notes in the back of our guide book and complied a list of our favorites:

After traveling in Ghana for four weeks I was thinking of renaming my business.  We spent some time thinking about names and the runners up were:  Sweet Dr. Jesus Godly Photography by Michael Tallman and Pray For His Divine Light Photography Enterprise.  After much thought we decided the web address would be a little too long and decided to stick with Michael Tallman Photography.
