Jessica and Eric Engaged – Salt Lake City, Utah

January 5th, 2011

Jessica and Eric met me for their engagement session at 9th and 9th (900 east and 900 south) which is populated with lots of great shops and restaurants and is close to where we all live.  We had coffee at the Coffee Garden, appetizers and drinks at Mazza’s, and gelato at Dolcetti as the twilight set in.  Jessica and Eric will be getting married this weekend so they will appear here again very soon!

Caroline and Justin Engaged – New York, New York

December 30th, 2010

I spent a few days in New York visiting friends and getting my culture fix before photographing Beth and Mike’s wedding a few weeks ago.  Justin is an old friend who was in my wife Leah’s medical school class so I spent one night at the apartment he shares with Caroline in Harlem and we did an “engagement” session the next morning around town.  Caroline and Justin are actually already legally married after a very brief ceremony at city hall this October, but I will be photographing their wedding (officially a blessing) in a little 14th century church in England this spring (2011 is shaping up to be a good year!)  We started at Lincoln Center and then made our way down to breakfast at Cafe Gitane, and finished the shoot over in Williamsburg, Brooklyn at the Hotel Delmano.

Jennifer & Jeffrey Newlywed – Battery Park, New York, New York

November 18th, 2010

I had an engagement session scheduled with Jen and Jeff back in July, but it turned out to be unbearably hot and humid that weekend – I think it actually hit 100 degrees!  All of my clothing was sticking to my body and sweat was pouring into my eyes – it was disgusting!  So it was kind of a relief that Jen asked if they could do the shoot another time.  I photographed their wedding in September, so instead of an engagement shoot we did a “newleywed” shoot in Battery Park last month near their apartment in lower Manhattan.  I was in New York for the week in between two weekend shoots in Vermont.  It turned out to be a beautiful morning and much more comfortable than the last time I was there!

Dana & Frank Engaged – Mill Creek Canyon, Salt Lake City, Utah

November 4th, 2010

Dana and Frank live in Salt Lake City, Utah but will have their wedding next summer in Charlevoix, Michigan which I will be photographing.  We did some engagement photos recently up in Mill Creek Canyon for the fall colors with their two dogs Copper (above left) and Sasha (above right).  Dana and Frank told me the stories of the unplanned adoptions of both dogs.  Copper was adopted after being abandoned in a neighbors yard as a puppy, while Sasha was advertised as available for adoption at the New Belgium Brewery (a great place to promote dog adoptions I think!)  They are lucky dogs to be enjoying hikes in the mountains with Dana and Frank!

Order prints and see the rest of the photos here.

Miki & Brian Engaged – Bonneville Salt Flats

July 5th, 2010

Brian, Miki and I headed out to the Bonneville Salt Flats in western Utah for their engagement photos.  This is definitely one of the most surreal landscapes I have ever seen!  It seems like you can see the curvature of the earth here.

After the sun set, we got into our time machine (not pictured) and went vintage.  The idea for these photos was inspired by Miki and Brian’s love of adventure travel.  They have been all over the world together, including Peru, China, Australia, Nepal, India, and Malaysia to name a few stamps in their passports.

The camera that Brian is using is a working Zeiss Ikon 5″x7″ field camera, which belonged to my great, great uncle and was given to me by my grandparents.  It is about eighty years old and in fantastic shape.

Miki and Brian would be able to find their way around a strange place in any century.  They are planning a honeymoon in Turkey – just because it is at the top of the list!  Instead of registering for salad tongs and avocado slicers, these explorers are asking their guests to pitch in for Kebabs in Istanbul and a Hot Air Balloon Ride over Cappadocia.  (check out travelersjoy.com if you like this idea)  I have a feeling that should the balloon stray off course and carry them thousands of miles off course they would take it in stride.

We ended the shoot with a lovely picnic in the fading light.

The pink blanket is a 2010 vintage, but I liked the color.  Miki and Brian will be married at Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City, Utah this August.
